Military Spouse History Throughout American Military History (18th-21st Century)

Hello
I’m Melissa—a USAF veteran, a seasoned retired military spouse, and a proud Aggie mom– and I can’t forget the three cats. My husband served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force before retiring in 2021. After a lifetime of moves, deployments, and adventures, we closed the book on our military story, planted roots in College Station, Texas, to be near our daughter and family, and began a new journey.
After settling in, I reflected on our years of military life—the experiences we shared, the sacrifices we made, and the incredible people we met along the way. That reflection inspired me to explore a new path: researching my family's military history and, in doing so, revealing the often-overlooked stories of military spouses and women throughout our lineage. This passion for storytelling and preservation became the driving force behind my current work, ensuring that the experiences of those who serve—both in uniform and alongside it—are remembered and honored.
This selfie marks the moment it all began—the day I knew I wanted to create a blog and share the untold history of military spouses. Monday, September 26, 2022, at 3:27 PM—a quiet yet defining moment when passion became purpose. The real challenge, however, was figuring out how to make it happen amidst the constraints of time and money.
My Story
Military life has influenced every aspect of my identity—both as a historian and as an individual. My journey hasn’t followed a traditional path, but that is precisely what has made it so rewarding.

I come from a military family, and my journey began when I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. I gained firsthand experience in the discipline, dedication, and adaptability that characterize military service. Later, I separated and spent over 25 years as a non-wearing uniformed military spouse. I embraced the challenges and rewards of life alongside my active-duty husband, moving across the world and immersing myself in diverse cultures, histories, and communities. Through it all, I learned that beyond resilience, there is grace, humor, and grit– qualities that truly define the military spouse experience.

My passion for history inspired me to obtain a Master of Arts in History with a concentration in Military History from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelor of Arts in History focused on Southeast Asia from the University of Maryland Global Campus in Japan. While living in Japan in the early 2000s, I had the amazing opportunity to teach conversational English and earned a certification from International TEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT).

My commitment to serving military and diplomatic communities took me to Hong Kong, where I worked as a Community Liaison Office Coordinator at the U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau. There, I received specialized training issued through the Foreign Service Institute’s George P. Shultz Training Center, learning about crisis management, security liaison, education, and resource coordination. Later, we relocated back to Japan at Yokota Air Base, where I became a Resilience Training Assistant (RTA), supporting military spouses before earning certification as a Master Resilience Trainer for the U.S. Air Force.
Today, I work as a curator and military historian at a small nonprofit museum, where I combine my knowledge, academic background, and deep appreciation for military history to preserve, conserve, educate, create exhibits, and share the stories of those who served.

Through it all, my passion for traditional/operational military history, as well as for new military history has only grown stronger and more frustrating, yet stronger. Whether preserving artifacts, curating exhibits, or sharing the untold stories of those who served, I am driven by a deep respect for the past and a desire to keep it alive for future generations. My journey has been shaped by service, experiences, war, and curiosity—and I wouldn’t change it for anything else.
